International Service
As a club we are strongly committed to the ongoing support of the global Rotary network, including our District, National, and International bodies, as well as direct contacts, to assist those around the world who are often in dire need. We provide grants and support to global charities and projects, such as disaster relief efforts for recent earthquakes and humanitarian aid to disaster-stricken regions like East Africa, Ukraine, and the Philippines.
We foster twinning relationships with the Rotary Clubs of Dinant in Belgium and Torsas in Sweden, engaging in regular exchange visits.
Our current international initiatives encompass:
Shelter Boxes: Outfitted with a tent and essential survival utensils for families affected by disasters, these boxes stand ready for deployment to areas in need.
Lifeboxes: Vital devices employed to monitor patient conditions during general anaesthesia, averting potential severe outcomes.
Microfinance: We extend loans to budding entrepreneurs, providing a leg up rather than a handout, empowering them to launch and sustain their businesses with the anticipation of loan repayment. Over the years we have donated £1,595. By reinvesting the repaid loans and interest thereon, this has led to 413 loans totalling £6,623.50. These loans have helped 1,262 entrepreneurs, 6,782 people and created 1,027 jobs. You can learn more by going to Microfinance from CARE International UK.
Nepalese Orphanage: Providing ongoing support to an orphanage that we built links with during our Hoddesdon 2 Himalayas expedition in 2017, to include, new mains drinkable water, solar heating and for the first time hot showers, Internet connection, gas provisions, new beds and bedding, play equipment for the outdoor area together with gifts at Christmas.
Shoe Boxes: Through a local initiative, individuals pack specific shoe boxes with goods for distinct age groups, which are then distributed to impoverished regions, especially during Christmas. These boxes are obtainable upon request.
Our past international projects have included:
Nepal: We contributed £5,000 via the Ghurka Welfare Trust to improve education and facilities for some of Nepal's most impoverished communities.
Bikes4Africa: We collected 90 bicycles from the Hoddesdon area, refurbished them, and shipped them to The Gambia, providing a means of transport for children facing long walks to school.
H.E.L.P.I.N.G.: A project in The Gambia that has benefited from our donations, which have been used to equip a science laboratory.
